Marcia Johnson is a Toronto-based actor and writer. Writing credits include Single Use which was commissioned by Climate Change Theatre Action and had public readings around the world. It will be published in 2018. Heavy is the Head was written last year when Marcia was part of the Thousand Islands Playhouse Playwrights Unit. The play is inspired by an episode of the Netflix series The Crown and explores the modern aftermath of colonialism. Other plays include Late (Obsidian Theatre), Courting Johanna, adapted from Alice Munro's 'Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage (Blyth Festival) and Binti's Journey, based on 'The Heaven Shop' by Deborah Ellis (Theatre Direct). She has also written opera libretti including the Dora nominated My Mother's Ring with composer Stephen A. Taylor.


As an actor, Marcia works mainly in theatre in such plays as Contempt at Storefront Theatre, The Gladstone Variations (Convergence Theatre) and The Real McCoy (Factory Theatre). This summer she will appear in The New Canadian Curling Club and 1837: The Farmers' Revolt at Blyth Festival: . Her brief TV appearances include episodes of American Gods, American Gothic, Beauty and the Beast and the Disney TV movie The Swap.


Marcia has also directed audiobooks for Penguin Random House Canada, is an active member of the advocacy group Got Your Back, co-curates Toronto Cold Reads and is the Vice President of Women Playwrights International. She has attended WPI Conferences in Toronto, Mumbai, Stockholm and Cape Town. She looks forward to this year's conference in Santiago, Chile.
